S&P 500 Calculator for UK Investors

Model an S&P 500 investment using GBP display, and understand what the calculator does not include: live FX conversion, UK tax, ISA or SIPP rules, and platform fees.

Assumptions

Quick answer: what does GBP display mean?

GBP display changes the currency symbol used for your inputs and results. It does not convert a USD investment into GBP, use a live GBP/USD exchange rate, or estimate the effect of future currency movements.

The default example uses a £10,000 starting amount, £500 monthly contributions, a fixed 6% annual return, 3% inflation, and a 20-year timeline. These are editable scenario assumptions, not a forecast.

S&P 500 returns are usually USD-based

The S&P 500 is normally quoted in US dollars. S&P Dow Jones Indices distinguishes price return, total return, and net total return versions. This calculator uses the return assumption you enter; it does not convert USD index returns into GBP investor returns.

Why an actual UK investor's result may differ

An actual GBP result may be affected by GBP/USD currency movements, fund tracking differences, FX fees, fund fees, platform fees, taxes, and changing market returns. This calculator does not model those variables automatically.

How UK users may access the S&P 500

UK users may access S&P 500 exposure through funds or platforms that track the index. This page does not compare products, recommend a broker or platform, or explain how to invest through an ISA or SIPP.

Lump sum, monthly contributions, or both

You can model a lump sum, monthly contributions, or both. Set regular contributions to zero for a lump sum-only scenario, or set the starting amount to zero for a contributions-only scenario. Contribution timing and compounding settings can change the result.

Before inflation vs after inflation

The after-inflation result estimates future purchasing power using the inflation rate you enter. It applies one fixed inflation assumption for the full period and does not model future UK inflation changes.

This is not a historical backtest or FX forecast

The calculator applies the fixed return assumption you enter. It does not use historical S&P 500 returns, predict future market returns, or forecast GBP/USD exchange rates.

The S&P 500 index itself is commonly quoted as a price index, which does not include dividends. If you want to model total return, use a return assumption that already includes reinvested dividends.
